Caveney nets hat trick, leads Pensacola to 7-1 win over Huntsville

The Huntsville Havoc could not stop the Pensacola Ice Flyers' Joe Caveney, who tallied a hat trick in a 7-1 win.

Caveney notched his first tally 3:18 into the first period. He then added goals at 5:51 into the first and at 1:32 into the second.

Pensacola led by only one goal at the end of the first period, but put the game away by scoring three goals in the second.

The Ice Flyers were led by goalie Matt Zenzola, who finished with 26 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Zenzola will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.41.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:39 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Pensacola forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up three minors and four majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Ice Flyers had been spending in the box. Pensacola found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Ice Flyers average 3.1 goals per contest.

Pensacola also got points from Joseph Holka, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Pensacola also got a goal from Josh Cousineau as well. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Ryan Kesti, who had two, Stephen Buco, Jeremy Gates, Steve Bergin, and Brandon Blair, who contributed one each, and Adam Pawlick and Corey Banfield, who each chipped in three.

Huntsville racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with four minors and four majors for 38 minutes in penalty time. The Havoc surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Huntsville's offense was clicking better than usual and put 27 shots on goal during the game, better than the 21.9 shots per game it averages.

The Havoc were led by Jeff Jones, who scored the team's only goal. Jones scored 16:20 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Pensacola. Dylan Nowakowski provided the assist.

Pensacola registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For the Ice Flyers, Gates was ejected from the game. Huntsville's starting goalie, Kevin Genoe, made 10 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Ryan de Melo, who stopped nine shots. The Havoc registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Huntsville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jason Popek was ejected from the game.
