Knoxville beats Macon Mayhem 4-3 after comeback scare

Macon Mayhem tried its best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Knoxville Ice Bears would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

Knoxville made the score 4-1 on a goal by Trever Hertz at 2:46 in the third period, and Macon Mayhem got as close as 4-3 when Travis Howe scored 17:58 into the third period.

Hertz was all over the ice for the Ice Bears, as he racked up two goals in the win.

Knoxville's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Bears surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Knoxville's offense was clicking better than usual and put 29 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.0 shots per game it averages.

Knoxville additionally got points from Corey Hale, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Knoxville also got a goal from Garrett Vermeersch as well. In addition, Knoxville received assists from Dan McDougall, Mark Pustin, Jason Price, Dennis Sicard, Doug Reid, and Danny Cesarz, who each chipped in one.

Macon Mayhem's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Knoxville power plays. By firing 42 shots on goal, Macon Mayhem exceeded the 16.1 shots it averages per game this year.

Macon Mayhem was helped by Daniel Gentzler, who registered one goal. Gentzler scored on the power play 7:09 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Macon Mayhem. Macon Mayhem had gotten the advantage when the Ice Bears' Price was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. Ryan Michel picked up the assist. Mark Rivera also scored for Macon Mayhem. Other players who recorded assists for Macon Mayhem were Jackson Brewer, Stephen Pierog, Nick Grasso, and Jake Trask, who contributed one each.

Brian Billett made 39 saves for Knoxville on 42 shots. Garrett Bartus recorded 25 saves for Macon Mayhem. Macon Mayhem totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play.
