GAME RECAP

McLean stymies Peoria, Pensacola wins 2-1

Peoria Civic Center    Sat, Mar 05, 2016

John McLean stood on his head and made 32 saves to lead the Pensacola Ice Flyers to a 2-1 victory over the Peoria Rivermen.

Peoria's power play was ineffective against Pensacola's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Ice Flyers were paced by Joe Caveney, who tallied one goal. Caveney scored on the power play 12:06 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Pensacola. Pensacola had gotten the advantage when the Rivermen's Mike Gurtler was sent off for roughing. Corey Banfield assisted on the tally.

The Ice Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Pensacola had been spending in the box. The Ice Flyers stifled Peoria's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Pensacola relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Stephen Buco, Charlie Adams and Caveney took 20 of the team's 36 shots.

More assists for Pensacola came via Mike Krieg and Jeremy Gates, who each chipped in one.

The Rivermen forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Peoria surpassed its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. The Rivermen could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Peoria puts an average of 3.6 pucks into the net per game. The Rivermen's offense rang up 33 shots on the Ice Flyers' net.

Peoria was led by Dan Bremner, who scored the team's only goal. Bremner scored 32 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-2.

Pensacola registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Kyle Rank rejected 34 shots on goal for the Rivermen.
