Early goals doom Columbus, falls to Pensacola, 7-0

The Pensacola Ice Flyers jumped out to a four-point advantage by the end of the first period and beat the Columbus Cottonmouths, 7-0.

Pensacola was boosted by Keegan Asmundson, who turned in a shutout with 30 saves. Asmundson certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.44 entering the contest.

The Ice Flyers got the win with help from a great game by Corey Banfield, who had two goals and one assist. Banfield scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:25 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Pensacola. Pensacola had gotten the advantage when Columbus' John Jackson was sent off for holding. Joe Caveney assisted on the tally. Banfield's next tally on the power play made the score 4-0 Pensacola with one second1 seconds left in the first period. Adam Pawlick picked up the assist.

The Ice Flyers featured an improved defense during the game. Pensacola gives up 2.8 goals on average per game. The Ice Flyers outdid their season average for goals scored. Pensacola averages 3.1 goals per game. By firing 38 shots on goal, the Ice Flyers exceeded the 27.3 shots they average per game this year.

Pensacola also got points from Stephen Buco, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Ludlow Harris, who also had one goal and one assist, and Pawlick, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Pensacola also had goals scored by Cody Dion and Mark Rivera, who each put in one. More assists for Pensacola came via Mike Krieg, Josh Cousineau, Steve Bergin, David Segal, and Brandon Blair, who each chipped in one.

The Cottonmouths could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Columbus averages 2.3 goals per game. The 30 shots that the Cottonmouths put on net surpassed Columbus' average of 25.9 shots per game this season. The Cottonmouths' defensemen bolstered Columbus' offensive attack, as they bombarded Asmundson with 13 shots.

The Cottonmouths were led by Kyle Shapiro, who took six shots.

Pensacola totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Columbus' Brandon Jaeger stopped 31 shots out of the 38 that he faced.
