Fayetteville beats Pensacola 2-0 as Bonar gains shutout

Sean Bonar made 34 saves to complete the shutout and led the Fayetteville FireAntz to a 2-0 win against the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

Pensacola's power play was ineffective against Fayetteville's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The FireAntz were paced by Benjamin Rubin, who racked up one goal. Rubin scored on the power play 15:35 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Fayetteville. Fayetteville had taken the advantage when the Ice Flyers' Steve Bergin got sent off for interference. Joe Tolles provided the assist.

The FireAntz racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game Fayetteville had been spending in the box. The FireAntz excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Fayetteville featured an improved defense during the game. The FireAntz gives up 2.4 goals on average per game.

Derek Elliott also scored for Fayetteville. More assists for Fayetteville came via Joseph Manno, Kyle Gibbons, and Brad Plumton, who each chipped in one.

Pensacola was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Flyers had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. Pensacola was held below its usual level of production. The Ice Flyers put an average of 3.0 pucks into the net per game. Pensacola forced Fayetteville goalie Bonar to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

The Ice Flyers were led by Joe Caveney, who took four shots.

The FireAntz registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Fayetteville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Rubin was ejected from the game. Pensacola's John McLean stopped 20 shots out of the 22 that he faced.
