Stoney Creek holds on for 6-5 win against WhitbyIroquois - Rink#1 Sat, Jan 23, 2016 Story by Narrative Science.
The Whitby Dunlops tried their best to erase a four-goal deficit, but the Stoney Creek Generals would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-5. A goal by Matt Smith put Stoney Creek up 5-1 in the third period, but Whitby pulled to within one on Scott Freeman's tally 18:31 into the third period. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:24 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Generals racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Stoney Creek surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. The Dunlops were unable to stop the Generals from sending pucks towards the net, and Stoney Creek eventually piled up 39 shots on goal. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. The Generals were led by Andrew Radjenovic, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Radjenovic scored short handed 18:37 into the third period to make the score 6-4 Stoney Creek. A fighting call on Chris Knighton put Stoney Creek on the penalty kill. Stoney Creek additionally got points from Smith, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Jarrett Konkle, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stoney Creek included Nikola Bibic, Jeremy Bloomfield, and Myles Falasca, who each put in one. More assists for Stoney Creek came via Mike Ruberto, who had two and Nathan Pageau and Jordan Morrison, who each chipped in one. Whitby was led by Kyle Ventura, who had one goal and two assists. Ventura scored on the power play 19:00 into the third period to make the score 6-5 Stoney Creek. Darren Doherty assisted on the tally. Whitby also had goals scored by Peter MacKellar, Connor Shingler, and Shane Terry, who scored one goal each. In addition, Whitby received assists from Patrick Jobb, Nick Jobb, and Matthew Baxter, who contributed one each. The Generals' Ryan Demelo stopped 24 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Stoney Creek registered one goal on two power play opportunities. The Generals ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Knighton was ejected from the game. Jason Guy made 33 saves for the Dunlops on 39 shots. Whitby totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 3-for-10 on the power play. For the Dunlops, Kyle Musselman was ejected from the game.
