Thorold squeaks by Whitby, 4-3

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Thorold Athletics escaped with a 4-3 victory over the Whitby Dunlops.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Brad Jackson secured the win for Thorold with a goal in the third period.

Jackson had a great game for the Athletics, netting two goals.

Thorold excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Athletics' offense rang up 37 shots on Whitby's net.

Others who scored for Thorold included Joe Christiano and John Falzoi, who each put in one. In addition, Thorold received assists from Tommy Barcz, who had two and JJ Martin and Derek Nichols, who contributed one each.

The Dunlops were held below their usual level of production. Whitby puts an average of 5.7 pucks into the net per game. Thorold was unable to stop the Dunlops from sending pucks towards the net, and Whitby eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. The Dunlops' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Whitby finished with 42 penalty minutes.

The Dunlops were helped by Brett McConnachie, who racked up one goal. McConnachie scored 6:56 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Darren Doherty picked up the assist. Whitby also had goals scored by Patrick Jobb and Matthew Baxter, who scored one goal each. More assists for Whitby came via Will Jones, Chris Gour, Jason Dale, and Matt Gray, who each chipped in one.

Frank Novello rejected 29 shots on goal for the Athletics. Thorold totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 2-for-11 on the power play. For the Athletics, Tony Geldart was ejected from the game. Jason Guy made 33 saves for Whitby on 37 shots.
