Whitby blows out Thorold, 9-4

The Thorold Athletics had trouble finding ways to stop the Whitby Dunlops, which beat Athletics, 9-4.

Whitby got the win with help from a great game by Scott Freeman, who had two goals and two assists. Freeman scored the first of his two goals at 8:18 into the second period to make the score 6-2 Whitby. Corey Tamblyn provided the assist. Freeman's next tally made the score 7-2 Whitby with 3:16 left in the second period. Brett McConnachie picked up the assist.

The Dunlops forced Thorold's goaltenders to work all game long, ripping 38 shots and forcing 29 saves. Matt Sagrott made 17 stops and Colin Dunne made 12. Whitby bested its season scoring average. The Dunlops average 5.7 goals per game. The defensemen of Whitby were also effective in the Athletics' zone, and came away with two goals.

Whitby also got points from Tamblyn, who also racked up two goals and one assist. Matthew Baxter also scored for Whitby. In addition, Whitby received assists from Peter MacKellar, Patrick Jobb, Kyle Ventura, Matt Gray, John Scrymgeour, and Adam Van Dam, who each chipped in one and Chris Purves and Shane Terry, who contributed two each.

Thorold put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Dunlops to score on any of their five power plays. Whitby was unable to stop the Athletics from sending pucks towards the net, and Thorold eventually piled up 35 shots on goal.

The Athletics were helped by Fraser Smith, who tallied one goal. Smith scored 10:24 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Whitby. Steve Zmudcynski provided the assist. Thorold additionally got points from Zmudcynski, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Thorold included Brad Jackson and Ben Clarke, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Reid Lesswing, Blake Kerling, and Tyler Turcotte, who each chipped in one.

Jason Guy rejected 31 shots on goal for the Dunlops. Whitby ended with seven minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major. The Dunlops ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and MacKellar was ejected from the game. Thorold incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
