Thorold takes care of Hamilton early, wins 9-2

The Thorold Athletics opened up a five-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 9-2 win over the Hamilton Steelhawks.

Fraser Smith had two goals and one assist to lead Thorold. Smith scored the first of his two goals at 14 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Thorold. Steve Zmudcynski assisted on the tally. Smith's next tally made the score 2-0 Thorold with 16:21 left in the first period. JJ Martin provided the assist.

The Athletics' penalty kill excelled, as Thorold gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:50 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Athletics racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game Thorold had been spending in the box. The Athletics forced Steelhawks' goaltenders to work all game long, totaling 39 shots and forcing 30 saves. Jeff Heartwell made four stops and Ben Goss made 26. Thorold stifled Hamilton's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Athletics' goal total was higher than their season average. Thorold averages 4.6 goals per game. The Athletics got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Thorold additionally got points from Martin, who also grabbed two goals and two assists, Luke Lynes, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Zmudcynski, who also had one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Thorold included Chris Risi, Blake Kerling, and Chris McLean, who each put in one. In addition, Thorold received assists from Jay Hill, who had two and Tony Geldart, Derek Nichols, Tyler Turcotte, Brandon Kerr, and John Falzoi, who contributed one each.

The Steelhawks' offense rang up 37 shots on Thorold's net. Penalties took their toll on Hamilton, as its penalty kill unit let in two power play goals.

The Steelhawks were led by Gary Clarke, who registered one goal and one assist. Clarke scored 11:08 into the second period to make the score 6-2 Thorold. Ryan Green picked up the assist. Hamilton also got a goal from Joel Petkoff as well. More assists for Hamilton came via Michael Cordi, who had one.

Frank Novello rejected 35 shots on goal for the Athletics. Thorold ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mike Kobylansky was ejected from the game. Hamilton ended with 41 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For the Steelhawks, Green was ejected from the game.
