Schomberg beats Huntsville 2-0 as Traikos gains shutout

Alex Traikos recorded a shutout against the Huntsville Otters as the Schomberg Cougars picked up a 2-0 win.

Schomberg's penalty kill excelled, as the Cougars gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays.

Schomberg was led by Justin Formenton, who had one goal. Formenton scored on the power play 3:59 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Schomberg. The Cougars had gained a power play chance when Ty Traynor was whistled for tripping. JP Crescenzi picked up the assist.

Schomberg stifled Huntsville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Otters were unable to stop the Cougars from sending pucks towards the net, and Schomberg eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. The Cougars were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 42 penalty minutes.

Carter LeRoux also scored for Schomberg. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Blake Culley and Linden Sturrock, who contributed one each.

Huntsville racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Otters surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. Huntsville's offense operated below its season average. The Otters average 4.0 goals per game. Huntsville forced Schomberg goalie Traikos to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

Alex Traikos made 33 saves for the Cougars on 33 shots. Schomberg registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. The Cougars ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Tanner Smith was ejected from the game. Connor Christanson recorded 36 saves for the Otters. For Huntsville, Nathan Zantingh was ejected from the game.
