Midland shrugs off penalties, upends Caledon, 5-2

The Caledon Golden Hawks failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Midland Flyers shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2.

Midland was led by Evan Buehler, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Buehler scored 17:34 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Midland. Jared Aube assisted on the tally.

In a losing effort, Caledon was paced by Mathew Pyz, who finished with two goals. Pyz scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:32 into the first period to make the score 1-1. A tripping penalty on Jake Walter had put the Golden Hawks on the power play. Kevin Pleasance picked up the assist. Pyz's next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Caledon with 5:46 left in the first period. Avery Rodriguez assisted on the tally.

The Flyers forced Caledon goalie Sam Procopio to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots.

Midland additionally got points from Matt McGrath, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Midland included Hayden Stewart and Matt Schieck, who each put in one. In addition, Midland received assists from Steven Pickard, who had two.

The Golden Hawks kept Midland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jake Norton made 45 saves on 47 shots. Caledon's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

More assists for Caledon came via Christian Mariconda, who had one.

The Flyers incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Sam Procopio made 38 saves for the Golden Hawks on 42 shots. Caledon incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
