Midland beats Schomberg 4-2 after comeback scare

The Schomberg Cougars tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Midland Flyers would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-2.

A goal by Jon Goldsworthy put Midland up 4-1 in the second period, but Schomberg pulled to within two on JP Crescenzi's tally 19:48 into the third period.

The Flyers' penalty kill excelled, as Midland gave up zero goals despite allowing 10 power plays.

The Flyers stifled the Cougars' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Midland got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. The Flyers could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 44 minutes in penalties during the game.

Midland was helped by Matt Schieck, who racked up one goal and one assist. Schieck scored on the power play 9:01 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Midland. The Flyers had gained a power play chance when Brendan Spencer was whistled for high sticking. Francesco Corona picked up the assist. Midland additionally got points from Goldsworthy, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Midland also got a goal from Steven Pickard as well. More assists for Midland came via Noah Bray, Bobby Logan, Jake Walter, and Will Craig, who contributed one each.

Schomberg forced Midland goalie Jake Norton to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots. The Cougars struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as they finished the game with 28 penalty minutes for 11 opposing power plays.

Schomberg also got points from Kiefer McIntosh, who also tallied one goal and one assist. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Ryley Egerton and Tanner Smith, who each chipped in one.

Norton rejected 44 shots on goal for the Flyers. Vince Michelizzi recorded 25 saves for Schomberg.
