Wellesley hangs on, beats Norwich 3-1

The Wellesley Applejacks took the lead against the Norwich Merchants in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 3-1 victory.

Wellesley took over the lead for good with a goal by Nick Breault at 10:04 in the first period. The Applejacks had gained a power play chance when Troy Lamoure was whistled for boarding. Sean McEwan assisted on the tally.

Breault had two goals to lead Wellesley to victory.

The Applejacks were led by goalie Ryan Hergott, who finished with 34 saves while allowing one goal. Hergott managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.35 prior to the game.

Wellesley excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Applejacks forced Norwich goalie Andrew Lefebvre to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots.

Nick Palmer also scored for Wellesley. In addition, Wellesley received assists from Cal Jefferies, who had two and Jake Wilkinson and Nick Mercier, who contributed one each.

The Merchants did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Norwich averages 3.3 goals per game. The Merchants' offense rang up 35 shots on Wellesley's net. Norwich was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 52 penalty minutes.

The Merchants were led by Jamie Kelly, who scored the team's only goal. Kelly scored 9:33 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Wellesley.

The Applejacks incurred 52 minutes in penalty time with 11 minors. Lefebvre recorded 38 saves for Norwich.
