Norwich erases deficit to stun New Hamburg, 5-4

Undaunted by a three-goal deficit, the Norwich Merchants battled back to claim a 5-4 victory over the New Hamburg Firebirds.

Norwich never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Merchants trailed 3-0 after a goal by New Hamburg's Tyler Kleine at 19:17 in the first period. Norwich tied things up at 3-3 on a power play goal by Troy Lamoure at 5:25 in the third period. The Merchants netted the game winner at 6:45 in the third period on a goal by Lamoure.

Jordan Gillis had one goal and two assists to lead Norwich. Gillis scored on the power play 13:29 into the second period to make the score 3-2 New Hamburg. The Merchants had gained a power play chance when Ben Playfair was whistled for bench / coach. Lamoure picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 5:22 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Norwich was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances. The Merchants got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Norwich also got points from Brett Parsons, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Lamoure, who also had one goal and one assist. Norwich also had goals scored by Dalton Alford and Zack Morrison, who scored one goal each. In addition, Norwich received assists from Matt Caskanette and Nathan Innes, who contributed one each and Jamie Kelly and Riley Monture, who each chipped in two.

The Firebirds were often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. New Hamburg surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Firebirds kept Norwich's goalie busy throughout the game, and Andrew Lefebvre made 35 saves on 39 shots.

New Hamburg was led by Carter Tracey, who registered one goal and one assist. Tracey scored 12:39 into the first period to make the score 2-0 New Hamburg. Walker Davison assisted on the tally. New Hamburg additionally got points from Tyler Randerson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Andrew Boer also scored for New Hamburg. Other players who recorded assists for New Hamburg were Chris Eckert, who had two and David Jennings and Jerry Ennett, who contributed one each.

The Merchants ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major. For Norwich, Adam Harris was ejected from the game. Ryan Purcell recorded 23 saves for the Firebirds. New Hamburg registered one goal on six power play opportunities. The Firebirds ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Adam Zehr was ejected from the game.
