Huge game by Mercier boosts Wellesley over Tavistock, 7-3Wellesley Sun, Dec 20, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Wellesley Applejacks' Nick Mercier had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing three assists in his team's 7-3 win over the Tavistock Braves. Mercier scored 11:51 into the second period to make the score 4-1 Wellesley. Brady Gerber provided the assist. Mercier dished an assist on Jackson Keller's goal that made the score 2-0 Wellesley at 3:28 into the second period. He then added assists on Brenden Goran's goal at 12:47 into the third and on Jake Wilkinson's goal at 17:58 into the third.Tavistock's 15 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Braves let up six goals while on the penalty kill. Wellesley forced Braves' goalies to work without much rest, ripping 43 shots and forcing 36 saves. Ben Larder made 18 stops and Riley Collins made 18. The Applejacks managed to hold Tavistock's power play largely in check, allowing only one goal while on the disadvantage. Wellesley's goal total was higher than its season average. The Applejacks have scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. Wellesley could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game. The Applejacks got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed four goals during the game. Wellesley also got points from Keller, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Nicholas Breault, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Wellesley were Sean McEwan, who had three and Spencer Brick, Shaun Pickering, Cal Jefferies, and Alex Uttley, who each chipped in one. The Braves forced Wellesley goalie Ryan Porter to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. Tavistock's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Braves finished with 40 penalty minutes. Tavistock was helped by #$self.jersey, who registered two goals. #$self.jersey scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:45 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Wellesley. A holding penalty on Keller had put the Braves on the power play. Braedon Hancock picked up the assist. #$self.jersey's next tally on the power play made the score 7-3 Wellesley with 1:21 left in the third period. Ryan Cadwell assisted on the tally. Jared Yantzi also scored for Tavistock. More assists for Tavistock came via Andrew Bogdon and Josh Borys, who contributed one each. Ryan Porter made 35 saves for the Applejacks on 38 shots. For Wellesley, Joe Heath was ejected from the game. Tavistock ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mackenzie Sealy was ejected from the game.
