Velda's big game bests Tavistock in 6-3 Norwich win

Brandon Velda had two goals and two assists to lead the Norwich Merchants to a 6-3 victory over the Tavistock Braves.

Velda scored at 7:27 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 11:59 into the first to make the score 3-1 Norwich.

Norwich forced Braves' netminders to work without much rest, ripping 32 shots and forcing 26 saves. Riley Collins made 17 stops and Ben Larder made nine. The Merchants stifled Tavistock's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Norwich bested its season scoring average. The Merchants have scored at the pace of 3.2 goals per game during the current campaign.

Others who scored for Norwich included Brad Vervaecke, Jordan Gillis, Zack Morrison, and Troy Lamoure, who each put in one. More assists for Norwich came via Ray Munro, who had three and Brett Parsons, Jesse Dunn, Derek Slaght, Riley Monture, and Noah Burns, who contributed one each.

The Braves excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances.

Tavistock was helped by Jamie Shoemaker, who tallied one goal. Shoemaker scored 3:18 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Norwich. Ocean Check assisted on the tally. Tavistock also had goals scored by Jake Wiffen and Josh Borys, who scored one goal each. In addition, Tavistock received assists from Cody Bateman and Angus Rowland, who each chipped in one.

Andrew Lefebvre made 26 saves for Norwich on 29 shots. The Merchants ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. Norwich ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Dipaolo was ejected from the game. The Braves totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play. For Tavistock, Jordy Schneider was ejected from the game.
