GAME RECAP

Wellesley boosted by Porter's play in net, beats Woodstock 3-1

Wellesley    Sun, Dec 06, 2015

Ryan Porter had a standout game with 29 saves, and the Wellesley Applejacks beat the Woodstock Navy Vets 3-1.

Wellesley's penalty kill excelled, as the Applejacks gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays.

Wellesley was led by Brenden Goran, who racked up one goal. Goran scored 6:33 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Wellesley. Tyson Bender provided the assist.

The Applejacks stifled Woodstock's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Navy Vets were unable to stop Wellesley from sending pucks towards the net, and the Applejacks eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Wellesley's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Applejacks finished with 38 penalty minutes.

Wellesley also had goals scored by Braidon Kerbs and Cal Jefferies, who each put in one. In addition, Wellesley received assists from Spencer Brick, Brady Gerber, Alex Uttley, and Sean McEwan, who each chipped in one.

Woodstock put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Wellesley to score on any of its seven power plays.

The Navy Vets were led by Austin Richardson, who scored the team's only goal. Richardson scored 17:39 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Dan Haig picked up the assist.

Team's Brick and Bender were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Woodstock's North Davies stopped 33 shots out of the 35 that he faced. The Navy Vets incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Woodstock ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Chris Thompson was ejected from the game.
