Wellesley outlasts Tavistock, 4-3

The Wellesley Applejacks and the Tavistock Braves were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Wellesley made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-3.

Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and Jake Wilkinson's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Wilkinson had a great game for the Applejacks, netting two goals.

Wellesley's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Applejacks had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. Wellesley forced Tavistock's goaltenders to work in net, totaling 34 shots and forcing 30 saves. Ben Larder made 27 stops and Riley Collins made three. The defensemen of the Applejacks were also effective in the Braves' zone, and came away with two goals.

Wellesley additionally got points from Brady Gerber, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Tyson Bender also scored for Wellesley. More assists for Wellesley came via Joe Heath, Braidon Kerbs, Nathan Schlupp, and Nick Mercier, who contributed one each.

Tavistock racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 45 minutes in penalty time. The Braves surpassed its season average of 30.0 penalty minutes per game. Tavistock forced Wellesley goalie Ryan Porter to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

The Braves were helped by Angus Rowland, who grabbed one goal. Rowland scored on the power play 13:38 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Tavistock. Tavistock had gained a power play chance when Wilkinson was whistled for cross checking. Kieran Van Boekel assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Tavistock included Mackenzie Sealy and Ryan Cadwell, who each put in one. In addition, Tavistock received assists from Shaun Pickering, who had one and Jake Wiffen and Cody Bateman, who contributed two each.

Porter recorded 32 saves for the Applejacks. Wellesley registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. The Applejacks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mark Lebold was ejected from the game. The Braves registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. For Tavistock, Andrew Bogdon was ejected from the game.
