Purcell leads New Hamburg to shutout victory over Woodstock

Ryan Purcell recorded a shutout against the Woodstock Navy Vets as the New Hamburg Firebirds picked up a 3-0 win.

New Hamburg was paced by Jerry Ennett, who had one goal. Ennett scored 10:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 New Hamburg. Mario Alyas picked up the assist.

The Firebirds put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Woodstock to score on any of its four power plays. New Hamburg kept the Navy Vets' goalie busy throughout the game, and Jackson Swindells made 35 saves on 38 shots.

New Hamburg also got points from Alyas, who also racked up one goal and one assist. New Hamburg also got a goal from Colin Martin as well. Other players who recorded assists for New Hamburg were Andrew Boer, who had two and Brandon Quan, Chris Eckert, and Walker Davison, who contributed one each.

Woodstock's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three New Hamburg power plays. The Navy Vets' offense operated below their season average. Woodstock averages 2.9 goals per game. The Navy Vets forced the Firebirds goalie Purcell to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

New Hamburg's Purcell stopped 35 shots out of the 35 that he faced. The Firebirds ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. New Hamburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alyas was ejected from the game. Woodstock ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For the Navy Vets, Austin Whetham was ejected from the game.
