Wheatley downs Alvinston in overtime, 6-5 (OT)

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks pulled out a 6-5 (OT) overtime victory over the Alvinston Flyers on a clutch goal by Nick Tavolieri-Essex.

Wheatley overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Omstead Sharks trailed 5-2 after a power play goal by Alvinston's Karsten Berg at 18:01 in the second period. Wheatley tied things up at 5-5 on a short handed goal by Delaney MacDonald at 13:25 in the third period.

Tavolieri-Essex was all over the ice for the Omstead Sharks, as he racked up two goals in the win. Tavolieri-Essex scored on the power play at 10:14 into the third period to make the score 5-4 Alvinston and again while 1:05 into the fourth to make the score 6-5 Wheatley.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:33 into the second period. Sixteen fighting penalties were dished out along with 14 game misconducts.

Wheatley's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and four majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. The Omstead Sharks surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Wheatley forced the Flyers goalie Matt Boere to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. The Omstead Sharks found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Wheatley averages 3.6 goals per contest. The Omstead Sharks was effective with a man advantage, and put in three goals while on the power play.

Wheatley also got a goal from Jack Leafeve as well. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Brian Johnson, who had two, Brett Bowman, who had three, and Kristian Filipovski, Cole Butler, and Mitch Lantin, who contributed one each.

Alvinston forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and four majors for 32 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game the Flyers had been spending in the box. Wheatley was unable to stop Alvinston from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 56 shots on goal.

Adam Leboeuf recorded 51 saves for the Omstead Sharks. For Wheatley, Kristian Brockelbank, Lucas Raffoul, Andreas Gossmann, and Connor Goodchild were ejected from the contest. Matt Boere made 29 saves for Alvinston on 35 shots. The Flyers registered two goals on six power play opportunities. Team's Jeremy VanDeven, Joe Stock, Ryan Cadwell, and Kole Keating were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
