Dresden rips Wallaceburg, 7-3

The Dresden Kings were firing on all cylinders against the Wallaceburg Lakers, and when the final buzzer sounded Kings emerged with a 7-3 win.

Dresden got the win behind a great game by Derrick VanEvery, who had two goals and one assist. VanEvery scored the first of his two goals at 4:59 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Dresden. Dillon Liberty assisted on the tally. VanEvery's next tally made the score 4-1 Dresden with 14:45 left in the second period. Kevin Ritzer picked up the assist.

Wallaceburg's power play was ineffective against the Kings' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:46 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Dresden's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Kings had been spending in the box. The Lakers were unable to stop Dresden from sending pucks towards the net, and the Kings eventually piled up 49 shots on goal. Dresden surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Kings average 3.9 goals per game. Dresden got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Others who scored for Dresden included John Montgomery, who had two and Alex Hall, Dayne Davis, and Phillip Clarke, who scored one goal each. More assists for Dresden came via Macks Holmes, who had one and Logan Purbrick, who had two.

Wallaceburg racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The Lakers surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game. Wallaceburg forced the Kings goalie Joel Sowinski to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots.

The Lakers were led by Justin Melo, who racked up one goal and one assist. Melo scored on the power play 17:53 into the second period to make the score 5-3 Dresden. A tripping penalty on Steven Funk had put Wallaceburg on the power play. Alex Ritchie provided the assist. Wallaceburg also got points from Ritchie, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Wallaceburg also got a goal from Kadin Ritchie as well. In addition, Wallaceburg received assists from Tyler McLean and Dylan Ryan, who contributed one each.

Joel Sowinski made 30 saves for Dresden on 33 shots. The Kings registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For Dresden, Ritzer was ejected from the game. George Hill rejected 42 shots on goal for the Lakers. Wallaceburg ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cory Lucier was ejected from the game.
