Essex outlasts Mooretown, 3-2

The Essex 73s and the Mooretown Flags were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Essex made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

The 73s gained the winning advantage on a goal by Michael Vieira 16:56 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.

Essex was sparked by Vieira, who finished with one goal.

The 73s forced Mooretown goalie Brandon Johnson to work between the pipes, taking 61 shots.

Essex also got points from Matthew Hebert, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Eric Shaw also scored for Essex. In addition, Essex received assists from Matthew Rosati, who had three and Adam Gaiarin and William Stadder, who contributed one each.

The Flags were helped by Colin Osler, who grabbed one goal. Osler scored on the power play 2:33 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Mooretown earned a power play opportunity when Shaw was put in the box for goalie interference. Kyle Smith picked up the assist. Mooretown also got a goal from Jakob Reeves as well. Other players who recorded assists for Mooretown were Nolan Riley, Brent Blais, and Alec Segers, who each chipped in one.

Trevor Wheaton made 19 saves for Essex on 21 shots. The 73s incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Johnson rejected 58 shots on goal for the Flags. Mooretown incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
