Niagara uses early goal to top Dundas, 5-3

The Niagara Riverhawks beat the Dundas Blues, 5-3, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Niagara took over the lead for good with a goal by Brandon McLean at 11:29 in the first period. Dante Zawadzki assisted on the tally.

The Riverhawks got the win on the strength of a great game by McLean, who had two goals and two assists.

Niagara also got points from Zawadzki, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Jarrod Peacock, who also had one goal and one assist. Dawson Ethier also scored for Niagara. In addition, Niagara received assists from Alex Cipriano, who had two and Alex Gonyou and Andrew Somerville, who each chipped in one.

Dundas kept Niagara's goalie busy throughout the game, and Scott Charanduk made 35 saves on 38 shots.

The Blues were helped by Ray Thompson, who finished with two goals and one assist. Thompson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 9:00 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Niagara. A tripping penalty on Lucas Marcon had put Dundas on the power play. Jaden Simoneau picked up the assist. Thompson's next tally on the power play made the score 4-3 Niagara with 4:20 left in the third period. The Blues earned a power play opportunity when Marcon was put in the box for slashing. Dan Pelosini provided the assist. Dundas additionally got points from Chris Cudek, who also registered one goal and two assists.

The Riverhawks incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Colin Bilik rejected 25 shots on goal for Dundas. The Blues incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. For Dundas, Connor King was ejected from the game.
