Port Dover holds on for 5-4 win against Grimsby

The Grimsby Peach Kings tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Port Dover Sailors held on for a 5-4 victory.

Port Dover made the score 5-3 on a goal by Eric Mueller at 8:50 in the third period, and Grimsby got as close as 5-4 when Daniel Scotland scored 12:21 into the third period.

Mueller had a great game for the Sailors, netting two goals.

Port Dover's penalty kill unit could not stop the Peach Kings' power play, which converted on three of four opportunities.

Port Dover additionally got points from Steve Goeree, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Port Dover also had goals scored by Michael Almas and Colton McLeod, who scored one goal each. In addition, Port Dover received assists from Alex Takacs, Colin Montour, Zac Mihalis, and Josh Turberfield, who contributed one each.

Grimsby kept the Sailors' goalie busy throughout the game, and Rene Kloepfer made 34 saves on 38 shots.

The Peach Kings were led by Curtis Conrad, who had one goal and two assists. Conrad scored on the power play 9:21 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Grimsby had gotten the advantage when Port Dover's Eric O`Keefe was sent off for head contact. Garnet McComber provided the assist. Grimsby also got points from McComber, who also registered one goal and one assist. Grimsby also got a goal from Marcus Brydon as well. Other players who recorded assists for Grimsby were Brady Cranwell, who had one and Aiden McCreadie and Matthew Jambrosich, who contributed two each.

The Sailors totaled 33 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Port Dover ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and O`Keefe was ejected from the game. The Peach Kings' Jeremy Currie stopped 20 shots out of the 25 that he faced. Grimsby incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
