Grimsby beats Dunnville 6-5 after comeback scare

The Dunnville Jr. Mudcats tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Grimsby Peach Kings would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-5.

Grimsby made the score 5-2 on a goal by Brennan Smith at 1:26 in the third period, and Dunnville got as close as 5-4 when Mitch Holodniuk scored 6:10 into the third period.

The Jr. Mudcats were unable to stop the Peach Kings from sending pucks towards the net, and Grimsby eventually piled up 41 shots on goal. The Peach Kings found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Grimsby averages 3.7 goals per contest. The Peach Kings' penalty kill unit could not stop Dunnville's power play, which converted on two of three opportunities.

Grimsby was led by Garnet McComber, who registered two goals. McComber scored the first of his two goals at 1:54 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Grimsby. Nicholas Purves picked up the assist. McComber's next tally made the score 4-2 Grimsby with 6:19 left in the second period. A slashing penalty on Chad Springer had put the Peach Kings on the power play. Trevor McEneny assisted on the tally. Grimsby also got points from Joshua Kozielski, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Curtis Conrad, who also had one goal and one assist. Addison DeTullio also scored for Grimsby. More assists for Grimsby came via Dillon Cipretti, who had three and Jeromy Hopkins and Kyle Kozielski, who contributed one each.

The Jr. Mudcats' offense rang up 35 shots on Grimsby's net.

Dunnville was helped by Travis Sheldrake, who racked up two goals. Sheldrake scored the first of his two goals at 11:22 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Grimsby. Luke Rowe picked up the assist. Sheldrake's next tally made the score 5-3 Grimsby with 14:38 left in the third period. The Jr. Mudcats had gotten the advantage when the Peach Kings' Luca Fantuzzzo was sent off for slashing. Dunnville additionally got points from Josh Phibbs, who also registered one goal and one assist. Dunnville also got a goal from Josh Meeuwse as well. In addition, Dunnville received assists from Connor Hannigan, Matt Dolan, and Aaron Krajcir, who each chipped in one.

Jeremy Currie recorded 30 saves for Grimsby. The Peach Kings incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Dunnville's Brennan Head stopped 35 shots out of the 41 that he faced. The Jr. Mudcats incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
