Bates leads Toledo to shutout victory over Pittsburgh

Glen Bates made 33 saves to complete the shutout and led Toledo to a 3-0 win against Pittsburgh.

Toledo pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 18 penalty minutes.

Toledo was led by Josh Somers, who registered one goal. Somers scored 13:05 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Toledo. Ben Hamilton assisted on the tally.

Toledo excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. Toledo's defense was surprisingly good. Toledo averages 2.8 goals allowed per game. Toledo forced Pittsburgh goalie Jacob Stack to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots.

Pittsburgh put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Toledo to score on any of its seven power plays. Pittsburgh was held below its usual level of production. Pittsburgh averages 2.8 goals per game. Toledo was unable to stop Pittsburgh from sending pucks towards the net, and Pittsburgh eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. Pittsburgh could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game.
