Wisconsin uses big second period to beat Rochester, 9-0

Rochester was within striking distance after one period, but Wisconsin put the pedal down in the second en route to a 9-0 victory.

Max McConnell spearheaded the defensive effort for Wisconsin, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 25 saves for the shutout. McConnell certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.3 entering the contest.

Nathan Viberg had a great game for Wisconsin, netting two goals. Viberg's tallies came at 13:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wisconsin and on the power play 14:56 into the third to make the score 9-0 Wisconsin.

Wisconsin forced Rochester's goaltenders to work between the pipes, totaling 40 shots and forcing 31 saves. Zach Mains made 13 stops and Kyle Plantz made 18. Wisconsin's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Rochester power plays. Wisconsin's defensive play was more effective than usual against Rochester. Wisconsin gives up 2.5 goals on average per game. Wisconsin bested its season scoring average. Wisconsin has scored at the pace of 5.5 goals per game during the current campaign.

Wisconsin also got points from Ben Ratner, who also registered one goal and one assist and Peter Henderson, who also tallied one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Matthew Carr also scored for Wisconsin. In addition, Wisconsin received assists from Austin Lewis, Zachary Ross, Ethan Luck, and Taylor Dickert, who each chipped in one.

Rochester did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Rochester puts an average of 2.6 pucks into the net per game.

Wisconsin totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Rochester incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
