Granite City's comeback falls short, Point Mallard wins 6-4

Point Mallard came close to giving away a three-goal lead to Granite City, but did just enough to escape with a 6-4 victory.

Point Mallard led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Point Mallard's Matt Goodman scored on the power play at 18:38 in the second period to put Point Mallard up 5-2.

Point Mallard's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Granite City power plays.

Point Mallard was helped by Austin Weber, who had two goals. Weber scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:13 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Point Mallard. Point Mallard had taken the advantage when Granite City's Eric Moser got sent off for tripping. Justin Dunn picked up the assist. Weber's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Point Mallard with 37 seconds left in the third period. Justin Delisle provided the assist. Jake Champaign also scored for Point Mallard. Other players who recorded assists for Point Mallard were Josh Hamilton, who had two and Jake Cox, Cody Thomas, Drue Amato, and Matt Darnell, who each chipped in one.

Granite City forced Point Mallard's netminders to work between the pipes, firing 37 shots and forcing 33 saves. Josh Martin made 20 stops and Cooper Seedott made 13. Granite City's defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Granite City is averaging 2.3 goals against for the season.

Granite City was helped by Tommy Giller, who registered two goals and one assist. Giller scored the first of his two goals at 8:31 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Point Mallard. Will Mix picked up the assist. Giller's next tally made the score 5-3 Point Mallard with 18:18 left in the third period. Tanner Skaja provided the assist. Granite City additionally got points from Braden Altena, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Mix, who also finished with one goal and one assist. In addition, Granite City received assists from Nigel Nelson, who had one.

Point Mallard totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. For Point Mallard, Johnathan Meakins was ejected from the game. Granite City's Mac Berglove stopped 22 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Granite City ended with 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major.
