Gwillim leads Metro to shutout victory over West Michigan

Jacob Gwillim was superb between the pipes for Metro, as he did not allow a goal in a 5-0 victory over West Michigan.

West Michigan's power play was ineffective against Metro's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Metro racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. Metro had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. Metro excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Metro was steadier on the defensive front than it has been for much of this season. Metro gives up 2.2 goals on average per game. Metro forced West Michigan goalie Joe Licata to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots.

Metro was helped by Chase Sereno, who registered one goal and one assist. Sereno scored 2:56 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Metro. Pearce Vance picked up the assist. Metro additionally got points from Devin Kelly, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Metro included David Chavis, Michael Tratar, and Jacob Drinkard, who each put in one. More assists for Metro came via Kevin Shand, who had two and Cam Schwartz, Jacob Gleason, Mathias Tellstrom, and Jacob Rutkoske, who each chipped in one.

West Michigan's offense operated below its season average. West Michigan puts an average of 3.7 pucks into the net per game. West Michigan kept Metro's goalie busy throughout the game, and Gwillim made 34 saves on 34 shots.

Metro registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For Metro, Gleason was ejected from the game. Joe Licata made 37 saves for West Michigan on 42 shots. West Michigan incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
