Yellowstone survives Helena comeback, wins 7-5

Yellowstone survived a determined comeback attempt by Helena on the way to a 7-5 win.

A goal by Curtis Greenbush put Yellowstone up 7-3 in the third period, but Helena pulled to within two on Connor Dunn's tally 8:38 into the third period.

Yellowstone's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game Yellowstone had been spending in the box. Yellowstone forced Helena's netminders to work in net, finishing with 55 shots and forcing 48 saves. Alex Kruger made 33 stops and Grant Martens made 15. Yellowstone bested its season scoring average. This season, Yellowstone averages 3.6 goals per contest.

Yellowstone was led by Tony Dahlberg, who grabbed three goals and one assist. Yellowstone also got points from Vadym Nesteruk, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Will Landsverk also scored for Yellowstone. Other players who recorded assists for Yellowstone were Max Doner, Nick Green, Nicholas Elliot, and Matt Runyon, who contributed one each and Mike McCullen and Mason Stewart, who each chipped in two.

Helena's offense rang up 70 shots on Yellowstone's net.

Helena was helped by Jay Forbes, who had two goals. Forbes scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 8:53 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Helena. Helena had taken the advantage when Yellowstone's Nick Pizzey got sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct. John Greer picked up the assist. Forbes' next tally on the power play made the score 3-3 with 15:01 left in the second period. Cody Vanthournout assisted on the tally. Helena additionally got points from Vanthournout, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Helena also got a goal from Matt Blassic as well. In addition, Helena received assists from Johnny Bonta, who had two and Wyatt Stotts, Michael Ballard, Riley Keays, and Blake Babineau, who contributed one each.

Yellowstone's Derrick LaCombe stopped 65 shots out of the 70 that he faced. Yellowstone registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. For Yellowstone, Manuel Manero was ejected from the game. Helena incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
