West Michigan rips Southern Tier, 8-1

West Michigan had a five-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to an 8-1 win over Southern Tier.

Devin Farkas was all over the ice for West Michigan, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Farkas scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:06 into the first period to make the score 1-0 West Michigan. West Michigan earned a power play opportunity when Curtis Carlson was put in the box for hooking. Dakota Ulmer picked up the assist. Farkas' next tally on the power play made the score 3-0 West Michigan with 19:35 left in the second period. Nathan Rieman assisted on the tally.

West Michigan's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game West Michigan had been spending in the box. West Michigan forced Southern Tier's goalies to work in net, taking 41 shots and forcing 33 saves. Tyler Geloneck made 29 stops and Steele Millard made four. West Michigan bested its season scoring average. West Michigan has scored at the pace of 4.3 goals per game during the current campaign. West Michigan capitalized on Southern Tier's penalties, netting six goals while skating with a man advantage.

West Michigan additionally got points from Chase Whallon, who also had two goals and one assist, Rieman, who also finished with one goal and three assists to lead the team in points, and Devan Bayne, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for West Michigan included Justin Bloomfield and Brandon Benaglio, who each put in one. In addition, West Michigan received assists from Davis Hudson, who had one, Josh Somers, who had two, and Brendon Block, who had three.

Southern Tier was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and two majors for 66 minutes in penalty time. Southern Tier surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Southern Tier kept West Michigan's goalie busy throughout the game, and Joe Licata made 43 saves on 44 shots.

Southern Tier was led by Kyler Chartier, who scored the team's only goal. Chartier scored on the power play 6:34 into the second period to make the score 3-1 West Michigan. Southern Tier had taken the advantage when West Michigan's Connor Henderson got sent off for hooking. Tait Aptakin picked up the assist.

Southern Tier registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For Southern Tier, Aptakin was ejected from the game.
