Ulmer leads West Michigan over Toledo, 8-5

Dakota Ulmer had two goals and two assists to lead West Michigan to an 8-5 victory over Toledo.

Ulmer scored at 2:50 into the third period to make the score 5-4 West Michigan and again while 12:30 into the third to make the score 7-5 West Michigan.

West Michigan forced Toledo goalie Glen Bates to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. West Michigan's goal total was higher than its season average. West Michigan averages 3.5 goals per game. West Michigan found itself short handed often, totaling 28 penalty minutes and allowing eight power plays.

West Michigan additionally got points from Josh Somers, who also registered one goal and two assists and Nathan Rieman, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for West Michigan included Chase Whallon, who had two and Ryan Price and Corey Siwula, who scored one goal each. In addition, West Michigan received assists from Zach Hand, Gabe Smith, and Justin Bloomfield, who contributed one each and Brendon Block and Devin Farkas, who each chipped in two.

West Michigan was unable to stop Toledo from sending pucks towards the net, and Toledo eventually piled up 40 shots on goal.

Toledo was led by Austin Turner, who had two goals and one assist. Turner scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 46 seconds into the second period to make the score 3-3. Tyler Zalecki picked up the assist. Turner's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 9:11 left in the second period. Toledo had gotten the advantage when West Michigan's Whallon was sent off for head contact. Nikolas Verbosky assisted on the tally. Toledo also got points from Zalecki, who also registered one goal and two assists. Toledo also got a goal from Ricky Kwapich as well. More assists for Toledo came via Tristin Snyder, who had two.

Joe Licata recorded 35 saves for West Michigan. West Michigan registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Bates rejected 35 shots on goal for Toledo. Toledo incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
