Syracuse beats Jersey Shore 5-4 after comeback scare

Jersey Shore tried its best to erase a two-goal deficit, but Syracuse would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Syracuse made the score 5-3 on a goal by Hunter Soden at 9:13 in the third period, and Jersey Shore got as close as 5-4 when Bogdan Khvatov scored 13:01 into the third period.

Syracuse was led by Soden, who finished with one goal.

Syracuse put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Jersey Shore to score on any of its three power plays. Syracuse's offense rang up 33 shots on Jersey Shore's net. Syracuse outdid its season average for goals scored. Syracuse has scored at the pace of 2.4 goals per game during the current campaign.

Syracuse also got points from Christian Paradiso, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Syracuse included Ryan Gilroy, Nate Walker, and Rocco DeRollo, who scored one goal each. More assists for Syracuse came via Raymond Rowe, who had two and Tucker Bartenslager and Josh Wallace, who contributed one each.

Jersey Shore excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Jersey Shore could not produce up to its normal offensive output. Jersey Shore puts an average of 6.5 pucks into the net per game. Jersey Shore forced Syracuse goalie Kyle VanWagner to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots. Jersey Shore's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Jersey Shore averages 2.3 goals allowed per game. Jersey Shore's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Jersey Shore was helped by Zach Roth, who tallied two goals. Roth scored the first of his two goals at 12:16 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Jersey Shore. Kyle Dickert picked up the assist. Roth's next tally made the score 3-3 with 4:43 left in the second period. Scott Hansen assisted on the tally. Jersey Shore additionally got points from Freddie Schaljo, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Jersey Shore received assists from Jared Schneider, Alexander Tan, Jared Karas, and Travis Valvo, who each chipped in one.

Syracuse's VanWagner stopped 43 shots out of the 47 that he faced. Syracuse incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Breadan Colgan rejected 28 shots on goal for Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
