Backstrom nets hat trick, leads New York to 3-2 win over Syracuse

Daniel Backstrom netted a hat trick to lead New York over Syracuse, 3-2.

Backstrom notched his first tally 3:17 into the second period. He then added goals at 10:19 into the second and at 17:13 into the third.

New York's penalty kill excelled, as New York gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

New York's offense rang up 41 shots on Syracuse's net.

More assists for New York came via Eric Hewitt and Augie Onorato, who contributed one each and Robert Kalata and Jimmy Warrick, who each chipped in two.

Syracuse's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three New York power plays.

Syracuse was led by Hunter Soden, who had one goal and one assist. Soden scored on the power play 12:34 into the third period to make the score 2-2. Syracuse earned a power play opportunity when Corey Rees was put in the box for tripping. Nicholas Sanborn provided the assist. Syracuse also got a goal from Tucker Bartenslager as well.

Stephen Mundinger made 28 saves for New York on 30 shots. New York incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Syracuse's Kyle VanWagner stopped 38 shots out of the 41 that he faced. Syracuse incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
