Smiths Falls wins tough contest against Kanata, 5-4

The Smiths Falls Bears and the Kanata Lasers were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Smiths Falls made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-4.

No lead was more than one goal during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Josh Leblanc at 18:25 of the third period.

Leblanc was all over the ice for the Bears, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Leblanc scored the first of his two goals at 24 seconds into the third period to make the score 3-3. Brett Garvey picked up the assist. Leblanc's next tally made the score 5-4 Smiths Falls with 1:35 left in the third period. Anthony DiPlacido provided the assist.

Smiths Falls managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Bears wound up below its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Smiths Falls kept Kanata's goalie busy throughout the game, and Patrick Kealey made 32 saves on 37 shots.

Smiths Falls also got points from DiPlacido, who also had one goal and one assist and Michael McKenney, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Corey Caruso also scored for Smiths Falls. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Broydon Stufko, who had two and Joey Rutkowski, Nicolas Coates, and Cole Busschaert, who each chipped in one.

The Lasers stifled the Bears' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Kanata was led by Tyler Young, who registered one goal and one assist. Young scored short handed 5:14 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kanata. The Lasers were on a disadvantage when Yannick Martel went off the ice for kneeing. Kanata also had goals scored by Luke Seper, Cole Lussier, and Kyle Dowdall, who scored one goal each. More assists for Kanata came via Jacob Balca, who had two and Quinn Pollock, David Pearce, and Will Gauthier, who contributed one each.

Evan DeBrouwer recorded 17 saves for Smiths Falls. The Bears registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. Kanata incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
