Carleton Place shrugs off penalties, upends Kanata, 5-2Kanata Recreational Complex Thu, Dec 10, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Carleton Place Canadians' penalty kill was superb, as Carleton Place survived multiple penalties to beat the Kanata Lasers, 5-2. The Canadians were sparked by Connor Merkley, who finished with one goal. Merkley scored on the power play 9:06 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Carleton Place. Carleton Place had gotten the advantage when Kanata's Yannick Martel was sent off for checking from behind. Andrew Dodson provided the assist. The Canadians' offense rang up 36 shots on the Lasers' net. The defense for Carleton Place tightened up when it had players in the penalty box, as it let in one goal on 11 Kanata power plays. The Canadians' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Carleton Place finished with 26 penalty minutes. Carleton Place additionally got points from Matt Lombardozzi, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Dodson, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Carleton Place also had goals scored by Kyle Dowdall and Alex Friesen, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Carleton Place were Bryce VanHorn, who had two and Marcus Joseph, AJ Klein, Shawn Kennedy, Nicolas Carrier, and Tim Theochardis, who each chipped in one. The Lasers were often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. Kanata surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Lasers were helped by Dean Hewines, who registered one goal. Hewines scored on the power play 9:26 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Carleton Place. An interference penalty on Klein had put Kanata on the power play. Alex Butler picked up the assist. Kanata also got a goal from Bryce Biller as well. In addition, Kanata received assists from Cole Lussier and Louis-Charles Croteau, who contributed one each. The Canadians' James Edwardson stopped 16 shots out of the 18 that he faced. Carleton Place registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. The Canadians ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Logan Buchannan was ejected from the game. Butler rejected 31 shots on goal for the Lasers. For Kanata, Martel and Jacob Moreau were ejected from the contest.
