Smiths Falls shrugs off penalties, upends Kanata, 6-2

The Smiths Falls Bears, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Kanata Lasers' power play opportunities and emerged with a 6-2 victory.

Smiths Falls was led by Corey Caruso, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Caruso scored 8:20 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Smiths Falls. Michael McKenney provided the assist.

The Bears put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Kanata to score on any of its six power plays. Smiths Falls' offense rang up 57 shots on the Lasers' net.

Smiths Falls additionally got points from Chris MacMillan, who also registered one goal and two assists, Matthew Kenney, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and McKenney, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Smiths Falls included Caleb Perez and Kevin Groulx, who scored one goal each. More assists for Smiths Falls came via Brett Garvey, who had two and Sterling Bray, Joey Rutkowski, Nicolas Coates, and Cole Busschaert, who contributed one each.

Kanata was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 26 penalty minutes.

The Lasers were helped by Jacob Cuffley, who finished with one goal. Cuffley scored 6:23 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Jacob Balca picked up the assist. Kanata also got a goal from Guisten Annetta as well. In addition, Kanata received assists from Joey Laird, who had one.

Dyllan Lubbesmeyer rejected 19 shots on goal for the Bears. Smiths Falls incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Bears ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jaylon Gorman was ejected from the game. Kanata's Evan Moyse stopped 51 shots out of the 57 that he faced.
