Smiths Falls holds on for 5-3 win against CumberlandNavan Memorial Centre Sun, Nov 01, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Cumberland Grads tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Smiths Falls Bears held on for a 5-3 victory. Smiths Falls took a 5-1 lead during the third period, only to have Cumberland storm back on a Shawn Cameron goal 14:42 into the third period to pull to two goals down. The Bears were sparked by Josh Leblanc, who had one goal. Leblanc scored 1:28 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Smiths Falls. Sterling Bray picked up the assist. Smiths Falls' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game the Bears had been spending in the box. Smiths Falls stifled the Grads' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Bears' offense rang up 32 shots on Cumberland's net. Smiths Falls additionally got points from Broydon Stufko, who also registered one goal and one assist and Johnny Curran, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Smiths Falls also had goals scored by Kevin Groulx and Matthew Kenney, who each put in one. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Chris MacMillan, Chris Karabassis, and Michael McKenney, who each chipped in one. Smiths Falls was unable to stop the Grads from sending pucks towards the net, and Cumberland eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. The Grads could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 22 minutes in penalties during the game. More assists for Cumberland came via Martin Frechette, who had two and Matthieu Franche, Zackhary Salloum, and Simon Besner, who contributed one each. Evan DeBrouwer made 33 saves for the Bears on 36 shots. Smiths Falls registered two goals on six power play opportunities. For the Bears, Nicolas Coates was ejected from the game. Cumberland's Ryan Coughlin stopped 27 shots out of the 32 that he faced. The Grads registered zero goals on five power play opportunities.
