Smiths Falls outlasts Cumberland, 6-4Smiths Falls Memorial Centre Fri, Oct 23, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Smiths Falls Bears escaped with a 6-4 victory over the Cumberland Grads. No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Cole Busschaert at 11:20 of the third period. Smiths Falls' penalty kill excelled, as the Bears gave up one goal despite allowing 10 power plays. Smiths Falls was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 20 penalty minutes. Smiths Falls additionally got points from Johnny Curran, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, Matthew Kenney, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Nicolas Coates, who also had one goal and one assist. Smiths Falls also had goals scored by Corey Caruso and Michael McKenney, who each put in one. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Kevin Groulx, who had two and Broydon Stufko and Chris MacMillan, who contributed one each. Cumberland kept the Bears' goalie busy throughout the game, and Evan DeBrouwer made 27 saves on 31 shots. The Grads were led by Martin Frechette, who registered two goals and two assists. Frechette scored the first of his two goals at 5:00 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Sam Tremblay picked up the assist. Frechette's next tally made the score 3-2 Cumberland with 7:13 left in the second period. Cumberland had gained a power play chance when Curran was whistled for hooking. Shawn Cameron provided the assist. Michael Larose also scored for Cumberland. Other players who recorded assists for Cumberland were Alex Cote, who had one. Smiths Falls registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Ryan Coughlin rejected 22 shots on goal for the Grads. Cumberland incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
