Kanata uses shootout to best Ottawa, 2-1 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kanata Lasers defeated the Ottawa Senators in a shootout 2-1 (1-0 SO).

The two teams needed five turns to complete the shootout.

Ottawa was stymied by Kanata's netminder Alex Butler, who stopped 44 shots during the victory. Butler certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 4.21 entering the contest.

The Lasers managed to stay out of the box better than usual, tallying one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Kanata ended up below its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game.

The Lasers were led by Bennett Altman, who tallied one goal. Altman scored 19:14 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Kanata. Cole Lussier assisted on the tally. Kanata also got a goal from Ian Johnston as well. More assists for Kanata came via Dean Hewines, who had one.

The Senators' offense operated below their season average. Ottawa averages 4.6 goals per game. The Senators forced Kanata goalie Butler to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots.

Ottawa was led by Jim Pearson, who scored the team's only goal. Pearson scored 11:00 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Zacharie Car picked up the assist.

The Lasers registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities. Marcus Paulino made 22 saves for the Senators on 23 shots. Ottawa avoided the penalty box for the entire game and scored zero goals off of one power plays.
