Smiths Falls rolls over Kanata, 7-1

The Smiths Falls Bears had a five-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 7-1 win over the Kanata Lasers.

Smiths Falls pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 21 penalty minutes.

The Bears were led by Tyler Creagh, who finished with one goal. Creagh scored 11:28 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Smiths Falls. Nicolas Coates assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 5:41 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Smiths Falls forced Lasers' goaltenders to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots and forcing 37 saves. Brian Wilson made 14 stops and Alex Butler made 23. The Bears stifled Kanata's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Smiths Falls bested its season scoring average. This season, the Bears average 4.3 goals per contest.

Smiths Falls additionally got points from Matthew Kenney, who also had one goal and one assist, Josh Leblanc, who also grabbed one goal and two assists, and Coates, who also had one goal and one assist. Smiths Falls also got a goal from Anthony DiPlacido as well. In addition, Smiths Falls received assists from Johnny Curran, who had three, Brett Garvey and Sterling Bray, who each chipped in one, and Johnny Kyte and Jared Henry, who contributed two each.

The Lasers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 15 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 25.0 minutes per game Kanata had been spending in the box.

Dean Hewines also scored for Kanata. More assists for Kanata came via Wesley St-Amand and Ian Johnston, who each chipped in one.

Evan DeBrouwer made 24 saves for Smiths Falls on 25 shots. The Bears registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Smiths Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kyte was ejected from the game. The Lasers registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For Kanata, Nicholas Graveline was ejected from the game.
