Clarington beats Lakefield 5-4 after comeback scare

The Clarington Eagles survived a determined comeback attempt by the Lakefield Chiefs on the way to a 5-4 win.

A goal by Kevin Smith put Clarington up 5-3 in the third period, but Lakefield pulled to within one on Jayd Killingbeck's tally 18:50 into the third period.

The Eagles were led by Smith, who grabbed one goal. Smith scored 15:46 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Clarington. Jacob Danforth provided the assist.

Clarington managed to stay out of the box better than usual, registering one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Eagles finished below its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. Clarington's offense rang up 46 shots on the Chiefs' net.

Clarington additionally got points from Darby Medd, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Clarington also had goals scored by Liam Osborne APM, Dan Michel, and Brodie Myers, who each put in one. More assists for Clarington came via Jordan Neuman, who had two and Mitchell Marchbank, Cody Kean, Brandon Hoskin APM, and Collin Weston, who each chipped in one.

Lakefield was helped by Aaron Vatcher, who registered one goal. Vatcher scored short handed 19:51 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Lakefield. A roughing after whistle call on Killingbeck put the Chiefs on the penalty kill. Eric Oosting picked up the assist. Lakefield also got points from Oosting, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Lakefield also got a goal from Jackson Bellamy as well. In addition, Lakefield received assists from Jeff Hawthorne, Nick Hildebrand, and Ethan Schott, who contributed one each.

Mark Robb made 26 saves for the Eagles on 30 shots. Clarington registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. Lakefield's Scott Smith stopped 41 shots out of the 46 that he faced. The Chiefs incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
