Clarington downs North Kawartha in overtime, 6-5 (OT)

The Clarington Eagles' Cody Kean scored 1:04 into overtime to beat the North Kawartha Knights, 6-5 (OT).

Clarington nearly gave up a three-score lead. The Eagles made it 5-2 on a goal by Dylan Howorko at 11:39 in the second period. North Kawartha got to within 5-4 on a goal by Ed Whitmore at 3:54 in the third period.

Clarington was paced by Kean, who had one goal.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 4:18 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Eagles racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. Clarington had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Eagles' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four North Kawartha power plays. Clarington kept the Knights' goalie busy throughout the game, and Spencer Green made 37 saves on 43 shots. The Eagles' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Clarington averages 2.3 goals allowed per game. The Eagles' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Clarington also got points from Kevin Smith, who also racked up one goal and one assist, William Lamoureux, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Brodie Myers, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Clarington also got a goal from Jacob Danforth as well. More assists for Clarington came via Mackenzie Morissette, who had two and Ben Pitchforth and Jordan Neuman, who contributed one each.

North Kawartha was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24.0 minutes per game the Knights had been spending in the box. North Kawartha stifled Clarington's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Knights got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

North Kawartha was led by Braden MacDonald, who registered two goals and one assist. MacDonald scored the first of his two goals at 7:02 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Matt Douglas assisted on the tally. MacDonald's next tally made the score 5-5 with 2:08 left in the third period. Justin Thain picked up the assist. North Kawartha additionally got points from Russell Fontyn, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Cameron Medland, who also had one goal and one assist. In addition, North Kawartha received assists from Travis Jamieson and Jesse Douglas, who each chipped in two.

Brett Chandler made 17 saves for the Eagles on 22 shots. Clarington registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. For the Eagles, Liam Rowe and Brent Hambly were ejected from the contest. For the Knights, Christian Lachapelle was ejected from the game.
