Clarington uses early goal to top Port Perry, 2-1

The Clarington Eagles took the lead against the Port Perry Mojacks in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-1 victory.

Clarington took over the lead for good with a goal by Dylan Howorko at 5:16 in the first period. The Eagles were on a disadvantage when Ben Pitchforth went off the ice for high sticking. Jacob Danforth picked up the assist.

Clarington was led by goalie Mark Robb, who finished with 31 saves while allowing one goal. Robb certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.61 entering the contest.

The Eagles pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 26 penalty minutes.

Clarington excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in nine chances. The Eagles were held below their usual level of production. Clarington puts an average of 5.9 pucks into the net per game. The Eagles kept Port Perry's goalie busy throughout the game, and Blake Shaw made 33 saves on 35 shots.

Clarington was helped by Justin Holiad, who grabbed one goal. Holiad scored on the power play 14:04 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Clarington. The Eagles had gotten the advantage when the Mojacks' Lucas Berkers was sent off for boarding. William Lamoureux assisted on the tally. More assists for Clarington came via Mitchell Marchbank and Cody Kean, who each chipped in one.

Port Perry did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Mojacks average 3.9 goals per game. Port Perry's offense rang up 32 shots on Clarington's net.

The Mojacks were led by Connor MacEachern, who scored the team's only goal. MacEachern scored 14:12 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Clarington.

The Eagles registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Port Perry incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
