Lakefield wins tough contest against Clarington, 4-2

The Lakefield Chiefs and the Clarington Eagles were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Lakefield made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Brady Osborne APM secured the win for the Chiefs with a goal in the second period.

Lakefield got the win thanks to a great game by Jeff Hawthorne, who had two goals and one assist. Hawthorne scored the first of his two goals at 1:33 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Eric Oosting assisted on the tally. Hawthorne's next tally made the score 4-2 Lakefield with 19:29 left in the third period. Ethan Schott picked up the assist.

Clarington's power play was ineffective against the Chiefs' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Lakefield's offense rang up 34 shots on the Eagles' net.

Lakefield additionally got points from Schott, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Lakefield were Devin MacLean and Colton Armstrong, who contributed one each.

Clarington did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Eagles put an average of 6.6 pucks into the net per game. The Chiefs were unable to stop Clarington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Eagles eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

Clarington was helped by Brent Hambly, who had one goal. Hambly scored on the power play 13:14 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Clarington. The Eagles earned a power play opportunity when Jayd Killingbeck was put in the box for hooking. Brodie Myers assisted on the tally. Liam Rowe also scored for Clarington. More assists for Clarington came via Cody Kean and William Lamoureux, who each chipped in one.

Michael Christie recorded 43 saves for Lakefield. The Chiefs totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with nine minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play. Lakefield ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Nick Hildebrand was ejected from the game. Brett Chandler made 30 saves for Clarington on 34 shots. The Eagles ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. Team's Justin Holiad and Collin Weston were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
