North Kawartha shrugs off penalties, upends Lakefield, 5-1

The North Kawartha Knights' penalty kill was superb, as North Kawartha survived multiple penalties to beat the Lakefield Chiefs, 5-1.

The Knights were sparked by Justin Thain, who registered one goal. Thain scored 3:00 into the second period to make the score 2-1 North Kawartha. Ethan Coens picked up the assist.

North Kawartha forced Chiefs' goaltenders to work between the pipes, launching 33 shots and forcing 28 saves. Brad Smith made 17 stops and Michael Christie made 11. The Knights put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Lakefield to score on any of its six power plays. North Kawartha was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 54 penalty minutes.

North Kawartha also had goals scored by Jackson Wiltshire APM, Russell Fontyn, Cameron Medland, and Nick Mann, who scored one goal each. More assists for North Kawartha came via Christian Lachapelle, who had two and Matt Douglas, Jesse Douglas, and Braden MacDonald, who contributed one each.

The Chiefs' offense operated below their season average. Lakefield puts an average of 3.3 pucks into the net per game. The Chiefs could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 40 minutes in penalties during the game.

Lakefield was led by Jayd Killingbeck, who scored the team's only goal. Killingbeck scored 2:53 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Lakefield. Keenan Runnalls provided the assist.

Spencer Green made 24 saves for the Knights on 25 shots. North Kawartha registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Jordan MacLean and Killingbeck were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
