Burlington holds on for 4-3 win against Newmarket

The Newmarket Hurricanes tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Burlington Cougars would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 4-3.

Burlington made the score 4-2 on a goal by Mike Faliero at 8:43 in the third period, and Newmarket got as close as 4-3 when Todd Winder scored 10:56 into the third period.

The Cougars got the win thanks to a great game by Tyler Riter, who had one goal and two assists. Riter scored 16:45 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Burlington. Philip Lagunov picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:26 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Burlington additionally got points from Lagunov, who also registered one goal and two assists. Burlington also got a goal from Willy Paul as well. More assists for Burlington came via Nicholas Holt, Matt Murphy, Zack Elson, and Kevin Dimagno, who contributed one each.

The Hurricanes avoided man-down situations well, racking up one major for five minutes in penalty time. Newmarket ended up below its season average of 14.0 penalty minutes per game.

Newmarket also got points from Mark Rozanov, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Marty Lawlor also scored for Newmarket. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Christian Dedonato, Marco Bozzo, and Steve Mariani, who each chipped in one.

Austin Washkurak recorded 26 saves for Burlington. The Cougars totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and had no power play opportunities. For Burlington, David Kiss was ejected from the game. Connor Ryckman made 23 saves for the Hurricanes on 27 shots. Newmarket registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. The Hurricanes ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alex Ierullo was ejected from the game.
