Markham outlasts Whitby, 4-2

The Markham Royals and the Whitby Fury were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Markham made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-2.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Marco Azzano at 12:15 of the second period.

Hudson Michaelis had two goals to lead the Royals to victory. Michaelis' tallies came on the power play at 8:47 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Markham and 18:19 into the third to make the score 4-2 Markham.

Markham forced Whitby goalie Daniel Mannella to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots.

Markham additionally got points from Tyson Bruce, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Azzano, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Markham received assists from Sean Perichak, who had two and Cooper Hyman, Brendan Valko, and Matthew Dunlop, who each chipped in one.

The Fury were helped by Ryan Taylor, who racked up one goal. Taylor scored on the power play 16:44 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Markham. Whitby earned a power play opportunity when Brett Markham was put in the box for boarding. Luke Keenan picked up the assist. Whitby also got points from Keenan, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Whitby came via Jonathan OHara, who had one and Scott Kirton, who had two.

Marcus Semiao made 23 saves for the Royals on 25 shots. Markham incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Mannella recorded 43 saves for the Fury. Whitby incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
