Stouffville squeaks by Whitby, 5-3

The Stouffville Spirit and the Whitby Fury were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Stouffville made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Ryan DaSilva's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The Spirit were led by DaSilva, who registered one goal. DaSilva scored 18:33 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Stouffville. Cameron Lintner picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:36 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Stouffville bested its season scoring average. The Spirit average 2.7 goals per game. Stouffville got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Stouffville also got points from Christopher Brill-Morgan, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Nathan Hudgin, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Stouffville also had goals scored by Spencer Roberts and Max Novick, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Stouffville were James Mense-Dietrich, who had one.

Whitby was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. The defensemen of the Fury were also effective in the Spirit's zone, and came away with two goals.

Whitby was helped by Rylee McKinnon, who tallied one goal and one assist. McKinnon scored on the power play 6:12 into the third period to make the score 3-3. The Fury had gained a power play chance when Zachary Roberts was whistled for interference. Ryan Taylor provided the assist. Whitby additionally got points from Luke Keenan, who also registered one goal and one assist and Jonathan OHara, who also finished with one goal and one assist. More assists for Whitby came via Scott Kirton, who had one.

Stouffville's Aaron Taylor stopped 26 shots out of the 29 that he faced. The Spirit totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play. For Stouffville, Kyle Linney and Jackson Savery were ejected from the contest. Daniel Mannella rejected 22 shots on goal for Whitby. The Fury registered two goals on four power play opportunities. Team's Austin Ulett and Jeffrey Gauld were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
