St. Thomas holds on for 4-3 win against Sarnia

The St. Thomas Stars survived a determined comeback attempt by the Sarnia Legionnaires on the way to a 4-3 win.

St. Thomas made the score 4-2 on a goal by James Newland at 11:34 in the third period, and Sarnia got as close as 4-3 when Cameron Clarke scored 19:43 into the third period.

With the win, the Stars evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.

Dane Johnstone had two goals to lead St. Thomas to victory. Johnstone's tallies came on the power play at 16:12 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and on the power play 6:28 into the second to make the score 2-2.

The Stars excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. St. Thomas forced the Legionnaires goalie Andrew Masters to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots.

St. Thomas also got points from Newland, who also racked up one goal and one assist. St. Thomas also got a goal from Andrew Chambers as well. More assists for St. Thomas came via Adam Truax, who had two and Carson Moniz, Spencer Hutchinson, Matt McJannet, Brett Van Dusen, and Carson Brookshaw, who each chipped in one.

Sarnia got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Sarnia also had goals scored by Sam McCormack and Hunter Tyczynski, who scored one goal each. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Ryan Trottier, who had two and Tyler Longo, Nathan Mater, Davis Boyer, and Tyler Prong, who contributed one each.

Brendan Polasek made 25 saves for the Stars on 28 shots. St. Thomas incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Masters recorded 31 saves for the Legionnaires. Sarnia incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors.
